Watch Me Entertain Myself!

Sacha Guitry once said, "You can pretend to be serious, but you can't pretend to be witty." Oh yes, I'm the great pretender.

Tak-tak-tak Attack

You know you're traveling in a Philippine highway when you see the gigantic Aji-no-moto bottle amidst the greenery of the scenery. For me this ubiquitous sight reminds me of the days when prices were low, politicians were noble, and vetsin was a must in cooking.

i tak tak mo, itak tak mo, itak, taka taka taka takataK! itak tak mo---ohhh ohhhh, tak tak tak! My father always says dat ajinomoto is not poisonous or health deterent (he's a chemical engineer who once worked in BOI and he made a study on these glutimen--something). the raw mat of this chemical is purely from sugar cane). Na politica yata ang ajinomoto kaya siniraan :(

AMATEUR: The phrases "when prices were low" and "politicians were noble" were lifted from Baz Luhrman's (Everybody's Free To Wear) Sunscreen>. I was just sampling the lyrics. Besides, I think that bottle was already up since the 60s, so back then Marcos himself still had noble intentions.

PAO: As mentioned in my comment above, yes, matagal na itong BTL na ito. Haven't you been to the NLEX or SLEX? :-)

Ito ba yung pag nasa Nlex ka na at puro fields na lang makikita mo?

Well, well, well, this is really something huh! Buti na lang walang ganito sa EDSA, or else isa na namang cause of traffic ito pag bumagyo...

Marcos had noble intentions in the 60s?

AMATEUR: Most things written about him these days like to emphasize his power-grabbing greed. But while he was ambitious and determined in his rise to power, Marcos is just like any person, with the capacity for noble or selfish intents. During the early 60s most Filipinos saw him and Imelda as the JFK and Jackie O of the Philippines. I don’t think a person can be so single-mindedly greed-driven, and it’s easy for me to believe that during those years he also had the welfare of most Filipinos in mind. Programs like Masagana 99 and Green Revolution were intended to really help farmers and Filipinos in general.

It’s easy to demonize Marcos at this point, and it’s very understandable. “The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.”

(FYI: I never voted for Marcos. In my first presidential election, I voted for Cory Aquino. And I was at EDSA in 1986; I was dancing in the streets when we received word that the Marcoses fled.)

So we disagree on whether the former dictator had noble intentions. Fine.

I read your blog for no other reason than that it's interesting and entertaining. Well-written blogs relax me. BTW, I blog under the name Amateur Misanthrope, not just Amateur. I’m not an expert in certain things, but like everyone else I’d appreciate being addressed correctly. Otherwise, I would think you’re being rude.

Peace.

A.M.: Pardon me if you think I was being rude. I just find typing out your blog name too long, and "amateur" is a shorter and is a less negative sounding nickname than "misanthrope". The initials "A.M." is the shortest and is neutral in meaning. Perhaps that would be to your satisfaction?

That Ajinomoto bottle's been there for decades na. I remember when I was in grade school, yan ang ginagamit kong guage para malaman na malapit na ako sa San Fernando. NLEX was not as fabulous then.
